Layout of the vineyard: the layout of a Vineyard depends on the terroir,
and it is important to make the most suitable choices as it is practically impossible to change these later on (a vineyard has a life of some 30 years or so).
In a climate like ours the vineyard is generally laid out in winter, so that the vine shoots (“barbatelle”) have enough time to take well, without running the risks of the dry season.
Laying out the vineyard includes the choice of the type of vine (the variety of vitis vinifera), of the clones (the individuals that make up the given variety), the rootstocks, the preparatory work (ploughing and breaking-up the soil, organising water run-off, fertilisation prior to planting), the orientation of the rows of vines and the density of the plants.
