People in Guado al Melo

Attilio Scienza: Co-owner with his son Michele, he teaches viticulture at the Università di Milanoattilio scienza and is a respected expert in the historical and cultural aspects of the grapevine and wine.He also served as Director of the Istituto di San Michele all’Adige.

Together with his wife Caterina, he managed the family’s previous winery in Trentino and facilitated the transition to the new wine operation at Guado al Melo.

Michele Scienza: Co-owner with his father, he is personally involved in every aspect michele scienzaof Guado al Melo, from vineyard management through to winemaking, and marketing and sales. His professional training was in wine science and biology, and he debuted with his management of the 1990 vintage, although he has been immersed in the world of wine since birth.

Annalisa Motta: As wife and collaborator with Michele, she divides her attention between wine responsibilities and care of the children. With a career as a doctor in molecular genetics research, she shifted to her present activities through work in a wine analytical laboratory and a Masters degree in sensory analysis.

Giovanni and Federico Scienza: What they like best is sampling the grapes in the vineyards when they are ripe and tasting the fermenting grape must, as well as searching for boar tracks and “driving” the tractor with their dad.

OUR CO-WORKERS

We started out by doing everything ourselves, but as the amount of work grew over the years, we needed assistance, and we have been successful in building a fine, effective, close-working team. There is much to do, particularly if our family winery grows in production and in numbers of visitors.
We are proud to introduce a staff that is international and also includes many women.

Durim Domi: Originally from Albania, Durim has been in Italy for decades now. He works both in the winemaking cellar and in the vineyards.

Lorena Guarguaglini and Jorita Domi: Lorena is “old-time” resident of Castagneto Carducci, and Jorita is from Albania. Both are expert workers in both the cellars and in the vineyards.

Pamela Cresci: With a degree in business management, Pamela oversees all the administrative and logistical duties.

Gabriella Gianini and Katrin Pfeifer: Both are long-time residents of Castagneto, even if Gabriella hailed from Switzerland and Katrin from Germany. Polyglot lovers of wine, they preside over visitor services, assisting our guests to get to know Guado al Melo, in Italian, English, and German.

The many students and trainees who have spent time with us--and will continue to do so: They have helped us mightily, and every year bring a breath of fresh air and good spirits to the hard labour of grape harvesting. We hope that they too have been able to bring away with them something that will prove useful in their future…
