The Etruscans left many marks on the area giving “The Etruscan Coast” its name.
The major concentration of archeological finds have been collected around the gulf of Baratti where the ancient Etruscan city Populonia is situated on the headland.
In the Val di Cecina the richest and most fascinating Etruscan city, Volterra, is easy to get to.
Remains from the Etruscan countryside (and others) can also be found in the numerous mines and blast furnaces scattered throughout the territory, from Campiglia Marittima to the Island of Elba.
Beyond Castagneto there are many small medieval centres waiting to be discovered: Montescudaio, Guardistallo, Casale Marittimo, Bibbona, Suvereto, Campiglia Marittima, to name but a few.
A little further south Massa Marittima holds a very old “palazzo pretorio” (magistrate’s court) a cathedral and many other roman and gothic monuments.
A crude model of the life of poorer classes in the medieval age is in the village of San Silvestro in the “Parco archeo-minerario” in Campiglia Marittima.
