Climate and soils: particularly favourable weather and soil
The climate is classically Mediterranean: sunny, with mild winters, dry summers, and modest amounts of rain.
Bolgheri does enjoy somewhat different conditions than its neighbors, however, in that it has significant temperature ranges between day and night.
This difference, along with soils that are generally low in clay content, means that the Bolgheri wines are elegant and fragrant.
More particularly, Guado al Melo soils fall into two main types, both formed from alluvial sediments from the Fossa di Bolgheri.
The first, referred to in the zonation maps as the “le Pocareccie” unit for its gravel component, derives from soils lying on old alluvial terraces with surface strata of wind-deposited sand, deep, well-drained soils with abundant pebble-gravel admixtures.
The second type, referred to as the “Castagneto” unit for its clay component, is constituted of soils on sand-clay terraces and undulating inclines, again with abundant pebble-gravel content.
