The Land: The Tuscan North Maremma
In the past the Maremma was marshy and malaria-infested.
After the great reclamation of 1700 it became a mediterranean garden dominated by olive trees, vines and maritime pines and cypresses. It is a countryside of strong contrasts, harsh and sunny in summer, laborious grape harvesting in autumn, mild winters often accompanied by strong winds, green and lush in spring.
The ancient villages aren’t on the plain near the sea, the old marsh, but protected in the heights of the hills. The woods are wild and stretch a long way: they give a feeling of something preserved and pure.
DOC Bolgheri extends from the Municipality of Castagneto Carducci (LI) along the Tyrrhene Coast, in the countryside between the hills and the sea, in territory rich in history and traditions. The cultivation of vines and olives has characterized this landscape since time immemorial, thanks to a particularly favourable climate and terrain.
The production of Bolgheri wine gained a certain notoriety in Italy and in the world in the 1960s and 70s with the discovery of the tendency of this territory to produce wines of great quality, from the typical Sangiovese to other vines like Cabernet and Merlot.
Castagneto Carducci is a small medieval village castled on a hill with a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside and the sea. After a short strip of plain rise hills covered with Mediterranean scrub, vines, olive trees, old houses and ancient towers.
The Municipality comprises of the small towns of Donoratico, Marina di Castagneto and Bolgheri.
The town of Bolgheri is often linked with the poet Giosuè Carducci who recorded the place in his works. (like the famous viale dei cipressi and the Oratory of San Guido.)
